Legend status fits like a glove

The curtain lifts on the 2008 AFL season and the West Coast Eagles’ big full forward Quinten Lynch is lining up for goal. The glove comes off. The crowd goes wild…Legend Lynchy.

Round 1 winner Kate Gellard of Northam gets her shirt signed by Quinten LynchLocal clubs have been getting their hands on West Coast Eagle Quinten Lynch's glove this AFL season as part of a competition being run by the Department of Sport and Recreation and 720 ABC Perth.

The "Lynchy's Glove" competition is part of the Department of Sport and Recreation's Local Legends campaign, which aims to raise to legend status those people who have chosen to spend their time actively helping out with community sport and recreation clubs.

As part of the competition, winners are asked to nominate a Local Legend from a community club who they would give the glove to. The club could then decide whether to use the glove to raise funds.

Lynch said he was thrilled to be involved with an initiative that was aimed at giving back to community clubs.

"The cause is very good I think, to acknowledge people who put a lot into their (community) sporting clubs. They never get the recognition they deserve, so I think it's a great initiative," he said.

Other community members can also have a chance to win one of Lynchy's gloves by tuning into ABC Grandstand's live broadcast of each Eagle's game and then listening to Sports Talk and Sports Extra on 720 ABC Perth or ABC Local Radio in regional WA.
