Introduction

However, there are some groups which , for various reasons, don't have high rates of participation. These include seniors, immigrants, Indigenous Australians and the disabled.
The department has programs and initiatives, including working with outside agencies, to assist people from these groups to realise the benefits an active lifestyle brings.

The Aboriginal Services Unit Regional Development Officers work in cooperation with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Australian Sports Commission's Indigenous Sport Program to help develop and promote sport and recreation among the Indigenous Community of Western Australia.
Recreation and sport make an important contribution to the health and wellbeing of all people, including people with disabilities. The barriers that once prohibited people with disabilities from enjoying the benefits of sport are rapidly disappearing.
