Northern Regions Recreation Conference 2009The high attendance numbers made the 2009 conference the biggest ever, and it was possibly the best too, with delegates rating the overall organisation, content, quality of speakers and venue very highly in the feedback they gave on the day.

A joint effort of the Department of Sport and Recreation's (DSR's) Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne offices, the theme of the 2009 conference was "Gaining the Edge".

A range of speakers encouraged, informed and empowered the delegates with nuggets of wisdom everyone could take away and use within their own communities and organisations.

Speaker Mark Casserly, President of Parks and Leisure Australia WA, said it was vital to be switched on to what was happening in the world and in our many environments and to be strategic with what we run with, because "the times are a changin'".

The importance of partnerships was a common thread throughout the conference - strategic partnerships were highlighted as integral to gaining the edge and achieving success in a competitive market.

A bi-annual event that was inaugurated in 1991, the NRRC provides a platform for professional development and networking opportunities for local and state government staff, sport and recreation personnel, industry representatives, peak sporting and community bodies and local associations and clubs.

It also provides an avenue to raise awareness of issues and challenges faced by everyone in the sport and recreation sector within the North West of WA.

Northern Regions Recreation Conference 2009 The staff of DSR Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne would like to thank our sponsors Skywest Airlines, Shire of Broome and Willie Creek Pearl Farm for their generosity and for helping to make this year's conference such a resounding success. Special thanks also goes to all of the guest speakers, and to the staff and management of Cable Beach Club Resort for their service and assistance.
