Position StatementThe State Government finalised the State Sustainability Strategy in 2003 to meet the needs of current and future generations through integration of environmental protection, social advancement and economic prosperity. The document provides a broad policy framework that requires disciplines and portfolios to interpret practical relevance and the application of the framework in their own context.

Sustainability principles apply directly to the sport and recreation marketplace in all three areas:

  • Social sustainability - includes contribution to social capital development, e.g. volunteer management and contribution to social cohesion;
  • Economic sustainability - includes elements of organisational and financial sustainability; and
  • Environmental sustainability - includes responsiveness to water conservation, energy efficiency and waste minimisation, and ecological footprinting.
