The league consists of six carnivals, or six rounds, held in six different communities throughout the Western Desert during 2010. Each round runs for a five day period and includes round robin matches in both football and softball competitions, followed by finals.

Although teams can win individual carnivals, points are allocated for wins within the round robin matches. These points are placed on a ladder that is continually updated throughout the course of the year. The teams at the top of the ladder in both the softball and football at the end of Round 6, the Jigalong Carnival in September, will walk away as the 2010 Premiers of the Western Desert League.

The Western Desert League also includes children’s sport which is run each morning and afternoon during the five day rounds.

Round 1 in Nullagine proved to be a great success with plenty of fast paced action and big hitting. In the men’s football, Kiwirrkurra community finished on top narrowly beating Nullagine in the final. In the softball, Punmu community nudged out Jigalong to walk away as the Round 1 champions.

There was a great turn-out with five teams participating in both the football and softball including Kiwirrkurra, Warralong, Nullagine (Irrungadji), Jigalong and Punmu (who combined with Parnngurr in the men’s competition). The children’s sport attracted up to 35 participants during any given session with junior football always drawing the biggest crowd.

The action is set to continue with Round 2 scheduled to take place in Kiwirrkurra community from 30 April until 4 May 2010.
