Athletes compete in their individual and team sports on a state, national and international level, with sports including Aussie rules football, athletics, basketball, netball, soccer and hockey.

The program gives young people involved opportunities to meet high profile athletes and role models from former basketball sensation Ricky Grace’s Perth-based Role Models WA, participate in structured sporting clinics and access mentoring.

From a community perspective the program contributes to community and club/sport development, community coach education, identification of young leaders and provision of positive options through sport and recreation.

A rewards program in Term 4 sees individuals selected from their communities and towns to travel to Perth under Ricky Grace’s Role Models WA program.

“For most participants, this trip is their first time away from their communities and their first opportunity to be exposed to things such as sporting facilities, universities, cinemas and high profile government and non-government agencies,” said DSR Mid West Indigenous Sports Development Officer Officer Adrian Bartlett.

“Week 8 is a unique regional program helping to ensure that the benefits of participating in sport and recreation are available to everyone, no matter where they live.”
