Coaching in Sport and Recreation
Behind every good athlete,
there's bound to be a good coach. Coaches play a vital role in the physical and
emotional wellbeing of athletes, drawing on years of experience as an athlete,
in a mentoring role, or both.
Coaches have to be aware of the latest trends in
diet, training methods and motivation techniques.
The Department of Sport and
Recreation provides coaches with a wide range of resources, including training
clinics and access to the latest research, to ensure they can keep WA athletes
ahead of the pack.
Training for coaches
The Department of Sport and Recreation is committed to raising the
profile, expertise and experience of coaches in Western Australia.
Professional development opportunities for coaches are the cornerstone
of this process.
We have a comprehensive program to provide accredited training and
professional development opportunities for coaches at the community
level of sport through to the elite.
The Australian Sports Commission offers a wide variety of training programs and resources to assist coaches to develop in their role. Many of these are facilitated by the Department of Sport and Recreation.

In 2009 the Department of Sport and Recreation developed a Coaching Reference Panel which consists of 12 individuals from the Sport and Recreation Industry. The Coaching Reference Panel advises the DSR on strategies and policies to develop and support the role of sporting coaches in Western Australia.
A national education and training system for officials at all levels and an industry recognised qualification.
Following on from the very successful Sports Officials Awards the Department of Sport and Recreation would like to give sports the opportunity to reward and recognize their coaches at all levels.

Mentoring can be a valuable tool to help coaches and officials improve their knowledge, skills and confidence, and achieve the requirements for accreditation. Suitably skilled mentors ensure that coaches and officials receive a positive mentoring experience. To assist in the training of mentors in sport, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has developed a Mentor Training program.

Antonia Harmer is the Australian Sports Commission’s West Australian consultant from the Coaching and Officiating unit in Canberra. Antonia has a wealth of knowledge and whilst visiting Perth would like to speak to SSA reps on current trends and issues with respect to Coaching and Officiating. Antonia will also be giving a quick overview on national initiatives such as the use of ‘Sports Accreditation Online’ (SAO).

This program is aimed at officials who are typically operating at regional or state level competitions. This particular Advanced Officiating Course has been extended to include topics that are relevant to today's officials, with guest speakers in attendance.

The inaugural Coaches Awards Dinner will be held in May 2010 at the Duxton Hotel in Perth. The awards dinner will provide State Sporting Associations with the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of their "Coach of the Year" and present other coaches with commendation certificates for their contribution to the sport in the area of coaching.

The Coach in Residence program is a long standing and very successful initiative that continues to contribute to the development of sport in Western Australia.
