Lotterywest Trails Grants Program

The Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and Lotterywest have partnered to deliver the Lotterywest Trails Grant Program since 1997. This annual program currently provides $1million worth of funding in the following categories.

The 2010 grant round opens on Tuesday 1 December 2009 and closes on Friday 19 March 2010.

Grant categories

(trail maintenance is not eligible under this program) 

  • Trail planning
  • Trail construction
  • Upgrades to existing trails
  • Promotion and marketing

 

Interpretive projects please note:

DSR encourages projects that demonstrate an interpretive aspect, promoting knowledge of the natural environment and cultural heritage. If your project is primarily about interpretation your application is likely to be assessed under another Lotterywest grant area.

This program encourages applicants to develop partnerships with their community, local government and landowners to ensure coordination of trail development in regional areas. Projects that are identified in relevant local/regional/state-wide trails master plans, demonstrate a specific need, are well planned, have good management and design components and are sustainable, will be highly regarded.

 

Essential criteria

  • Groups eligible to apply are not for profit, community organisations including local government.
  • Local DSR office has discussed your proposal to ensure eligibility.
  • Documented support from local government or land manager.
  • All projects to be completed within 12 months of official notification.
  • Two copies of the Lotterywest and DSR grant application must be supplied.

 

 

Grant amounts

  • Small grants $1–$15,000
  • Large grants $15,001–$100,000 maximum         

Organisations applying for a large grant are required to provide a matching $1 for $1 contribution. This matching component may be: 

  • Financial (a direct $1 for $1 contribution).
  • In kind (no more than 25 per cent of the total project cost) e.g.
    • Loan of machinery
    • Provision of appropriate material
    • Skilled labour (industry rate)
    • Non-skilled or voluntary labour (calculated at $20 p/hr)

Applicants are required to discuss their proposals with DSR staff to ensure their project is eligible for grant assistance. Consultation with DSR will form part of the assessment of every application. Please contact your local office for advice and specific assistance in completing your application. DSR regional offices:

Goals

Infrastructure

Support the planning, development and management of a statewide network of quality recreation trails.

Facilitation

Create an environment in which trail initiatives are fostered through appropriate and committed organisations.

Information

Maintain and enhance trail related information and expertise and develop initiatives to utilise these resources for the overall benefit of the trails community.

Promotion

Promote trails as a cost effective, beneficial and widely accessible community resource.

Representation

As lead agency, provide leadership for the continued development of trails in Western Australia for the recreation and health benefits of the Community.
