Indigenous seniors attended an Aboriginal Seniors Activity and Information Day (ASAID) in Belmont recently, where they participated in a wide range of fun activities.
29 March 2010

Ninety-six Aboriginal seniors attended the ASAID event on 23 February 2010 at Belmont Oasis, a number that has steadily increased over the five years the program has been running.
The event was sponsored by the Seniors Recreation Council of WA and the Department of Sport and Recreation. The Aboriginal Legal Service, Independent Living Centre, Aboriginal Alcohol and Drug Service, Centrelink, Heart Foundation and South West Metro Health Service also lent their support.
According to Seniors Recreation Council Administrator Dawn Yates, the day was a big success.
“It was one of our best attended days. Almost everyone had a go at all the activities which is fantastic,” she said.
Held approximately three times a year, ASAID is a chance for people to chat with others and learn from displays of information from groups such as Australian Hearing, Breast Screen WA, the Independent Living Centre and the Department of Indigenous Affairs Family Histories information service.
“It’s an opportunity for us to expose Indigenous seniors not only to different types of sport and recreation activities, but the different goods and services that are available as well,” said Dawn.
The next ASAID event will be held at Lake Leschenaultia on 20 April 2010 with the focus shifting to recreational activities in the great outdoors. Participants can look forward to music and bushwalking amongst other things.
A big thank you must go out to Hugh Rogers and Dawn Yates from the Seniors Recreation Council for helping to make the day possible, and no doubt they’ll continue to be a success.
