The lack of engagement of sport, recreation and open space professionals in the urban and regional planning process has led to a system that fails to respond to the needs of existing and emerging communities.
Often the ongoing management, maintenance and use of community infrastructure is ignored until after the decision making process, and after formal agreements have been finalised.
It is generally accepted, particularly in local government, that bringing sport and recreation professionals into the decision making process earlier will more adequately address the long term viability and sustainability of community infrastructure.
