Life After Football ParticipantsThe workshop coincided with the West Coast Eagles visit to the region and participants had the opportunity to undergo abbreviated courses taught by some of the Eagles off-field team, as well as some of Peel Thunder’s key contributors. Those who attended learnt about a variety of topics including, coaching, being a committee member and sports training.

WA State Umpiring Coach Daryl Sinclair was also put in the hot seat to explain some of the finer points to interpreting passages of play.

The Department of Sport and Recreation’s Indigenous Sport Development Officer for the Peel region Trevor Stack said the day was a huge success.

“It was a small but enthusiastic group. The aim was to give the guys a look at the other side of the fence now that their football careers are over and hopefully retain their involvement in the game,” he said.

“We gave the participants the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the game that they love and provided them with information about where to go from here. The rest is up to them, but four of the people who came are now looking to undertake a Level 1 Coaching course, so that’s a real positive.

“Due to the success of this workshop, we are now looking to roll out similar programs in the South West region, so that’s pretty exciting.”
