The newly named Academy is the result of a Grass Roots Netball Program being established in the Goldfields, aimed at keeping local Indigenous netball players aged 8–17 years on the court and providing them with opportunities to reach new heights in the sport.

Players involved will benefit from a range of development opportunities, including potentially competing in the Northern Territory Netball Championships to experience competition at a State level, and various other carnivals.

Separate to the local netball association, the Academy is the result of an Indigenous Netball Program funded by Healthway, Netball WA and Netball Australia, with support from the Department of Sport and Recreation’s (DSR’s) Indigenous Sports Development Officers (ISDOs). The ISDOs play an active role in encouraging participation by engaging the community and providing linkages into the program.

Goldfields ISDO Christine Donaldson said the naming of the Academy by the Goldfields Grass Roots Netball Working Party was a milestone in the working party’s bid to get the program off the ground in the region.

“The naming of the Academy is an exciting development that brings us a big step closer to getting a Grass Roots Netball Program up and running in the Goldfields,” Ms Donaldson said.

“Similar programs are already running in Perth and regional areas such as Bunbury, Northam, Katanning and Mandurah, and it’s wonderful that our own local people and community will soon be reaping the many rewards that come from being part of a program like this, and from participating in sport and recreation in general.”

Members of the community can also submit their design for the team’s logo for a chance to win a netball. Contact Christine Donaldson at DSR’s Goldfields office for more information on 9022 5800 or christine.donaldson@dsr.wa.gov.au
