Industry-representative organisations have an important and integral role to play in the long-term development, professional education and strategic positions of the recreation sector in Western Australia.

Unlike their sporting counterparts, recreation bodies do not draw on large membership bases built on competition, rather they seek to present the views of a largely unstructured, informal and diverse segment of the active community.

Physical activity via recreation pursuits has a profound and positive effect on our growing and complex society in term of creating a healthier population, contributing to a stronger economy and cultivating stronger communities. For these reasons (and based on the recent Recreation Strategic Reform Agenda), the Department of Sport and Recreation will continue to support and work collaboratively with representative organisations in the recreation sector. To assist this process, a dedicated consultant from the department's Recreation team has been assigned to each body. 

Fitness WA, Park and Leisure Australia, LIWA Aquatics, Outdoors WA and Trails WA are the current representative bodies that provide a range of services to progress the development of professional, community and infrastructural resources in their particular fields.

From 1 July 2008, Fitness Australia Limited began operating as a single entity representing the Australian Fitness Industry. LIWA Aquatics

LIWA Aquatics is a voluntary body with a 41-year history in the aquatic recreation industry. The primary focus of the institute is to provide support and direction to the aquatic recreation sector at all levels.

Trails WA

Trails provide a great opportunity to get out of the car and enjoy some physical activity while discovering the beautiful landscapes and heritage of Western Australia.

The Trails WA website provides an overview of some of the best trails our state has to offer and links you to other websites for more information.

A selection of well-maintained, well-marked trails that are reasonably easy to get to are listed.  Most of these happen to be in the south-west corner of WA, which is one of the world's environmental hot spots with an enormous array of wildflowers, majestic karri and tingle forests and coastal heathlands.

The Department of Environment and Conservation, Department of Sport and Recreation and Tourism WA  are all working towards enhancing our trails network to bring you more opportunities, including more canoeing, equestrian and mountain bike trails, and we invite you to return to the website in future as more trails are added.

TrailsWA Reference Panel

The TrailsWA Reference Panel is a representative group convened to oversee and guide the ongoing planning of projects associated with the Future Direction of Trails Development in WA (FRTD). The panel will comprise of nominated representatives from:

• Department of Sport and Recreation
• Department of Environment and Conservation
• Tourism WA
• Department for Planning
• Department of Local Government and Regional Development
• Western Australian Local Government Association
• National Trust of Australia (WA)

The panel provides input into trails development and policy proposals identified within the FDTD to ensure: 

• a cross-government and community coordinated approach to trails policy planning, funding and programs and services
• that timely and appropriate advice is provided to government
• that the desired outcomes, strategies, and tasks within the FDTD are progressed in a structured and cohesive manner ensuring maximum benefit to all stakeholder's, and is consistent with the government policy
• the government requirements for the planning and sustainable management of trails development proposals are consistent with government expectations and standards

Adventure Activity Standards

Following an incident in the State's north several years ago, the Western Australian Government established a task force to analyse the issues surrounding visitor safety in adventurous outdoor activity.

Recreation Advisory Panel

In November 2006, the department established a Recreation Advisory Panel as an initiative arising from the analysis of the recreation sector and consequent Strategic Reform Agenda.

Extreme sports

The Department of Sport and Recreation recently contracted a consultant to research the issues surrounding extreme/challenge activities in Western Australia.

Healthy Active Workplaces

To assist Western Australian workplaces to improve the health and wellbeing of their employees, the Department of Sport and Recreation, in partnership with the Premier's Physical Activity Taskforce, has commenced the Healthy Active Workplaces Initiative.

Off-road vehicles

Recently there has been an increase in popularity of recreational trail bike riders and a decrease in legal recreational riding areas due to land acquisitions and environmental issues.

These codes are the first of their kind in Western Australia and as such remain to be refined as part the development of an industry best practice model.

Regional recreation

The Recreation Unit has an ongoing commitment to working collaboratively with regional personnel to progress and support long-term recreation and non-competitive physical activity outside the metropolitan area.

Recreation Strategic Reform Agenda

In 2005 the department committed resources to undertake an analysis of its services and programs for the recreation sector. An extensive consultation process was undertaken with key individuals and stakeholders from across recreation, local government, fitness, outdoor recreation and camps interest areas.

Trails

Trails connect people with places and provide a wonderful way to discover Western Australia’s unique landscapes and explore our heritage. You can hike in our national parks and see spectacular wildflowers, paddle downstream through the tranquil forests or head off on an exhilarating mountain bike adventure.

Walking

Walking is a great way to be active, it’s a low impact exercise on the body, inexpensive to do and most enjoyable.
