People of the South West regard community facilities to be
important, complementing the process of economic development and
helping to attract workers to the region.
Sport and recreation activities range from competitive individual or team sports, to more passive activities, like enjoying a stroll on the beach or bushwalking on one of the many scenic forest trails.
Excellent sport and recreation facilities have been built throughout the region. There are indoor aquatic centres in Australind, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Donnybrook and Manjimup, along with indoor multi-purpose recreation centres located in most towns within the region.
The Department of Sport and Recreation, through its Bunbury office, continues to actively assist with the planning of the region's future needs to ensure an appropriate level of community infrastructure and opportunities for all to participate in their chosen leisure activity.
The South West office offers a range of workshops and seminars on coaching (via the South West Coaches Network) and club development. These opportunities provide the general public with access to speakers who teach the latest techniques for providing better sport and recreation services.
Sports regularly competing in the state's highest level of competition include basketball, netball, hockey, soccer and rugby. The South West is recognised as a nursery for many state and national team members across a variety of sports, with many locally developed athletes competing at the highest level. This success has seen the establishment of the first regional academy, the South West Academy of Sport, opening its doors in 2008.
